TEGO® Airex 901 W N & 902 W N – future proof options to combat microfoam

Coatings are often intended to fulfill decorative as well as substrate protection requirements. This is also true for wood coatings – they are used for a broad variety of applications like furniture, parquet, joinery, exterior stains & topcoats or trim paints. For all of these coating films, foam bubbles are clearly unwanted and efficient defoamers or deaerators are typically used to eliminate foam bubbles from the manufacturing process till the final dry film.

Benefits at a Glance

Utmost efficiency needed

Some coating systems can be particularly demanding regarding elimination of air bubbles – this is for example true for waterborne airless/airmix applied formulations of quite high viscosity where lots of microfoam bubbles can be entrapped in the wet coating film after spray. It is often very challenging to fully eliminate this microfoam – one key factor is to ensure very low air entrapment during the application step.

Compatibility requirements

Lower viscosity waterborne systems – like furniture coatings – often require a combination of efficient microfoam and macrofoam elimination e.g. during airmix spray application steps. In addition to these efficiency needs, the compatibility of added suitable defoamers or deaerators is a key requirement for these systems since they show significant risk of crater formation.

Expertise in deaerator formulation

Formulations of specialty modified siloxanes can be tailored to cover a wide range of property profiles. This includes the optimization of active ingredients like polyether modified siloxanes as well as the additive formulation – like emulsions providing exactly the right droplet size distribution of defoamers and deaerators in waterborne systems even when only mild shear forces can be applied for incorporation.
Since many years, Evonik Coating Additives offers a well-established portfolio of defoamers and deaerators for microfoam and macrofoam elimination in waterborne wood coatings.

Growing Sustainability & Regulatory Needs

Today, many fields of application require certain regulatory profiles of coating formulations – like e.g. compliance to regulations for environmental protection. In the EMEA region, compliance to EU Ecolabel, the Nordic Swan or the Blue Angel are standards for wood coatings – in addition, many formulators want to minimize working safety risk and require raw materials with very favorable product safety documents. For modified siloxanes, this e.g. results in the demand for products without SVHC substances as well as no critical H phrases mentioned on safety data sheets.

Two new deaerators for waterborne wood coatings

In order to cover the technical and regulatory requirements mentioned above, Evonik Coating Additives has introduced TEGO® Airex 901 W N and TEGO® Airex 902 W N as two new deaerators for waterborne wood coatings. They are both perfectly suitable e.g. for EU Ecolabel compliant formulations and have different technical performance profiles.

Summary

TEGO® Airex 901 W N and TEGO® Airex 902 W N are two new deaerators within Evonik Coating Additives’ deaerator portfolio for waterborne wood coatings – they provide outstanding deaeration for a broad range of formulations combined with very favorable regulatory profiles.
