Evonik's range of specialty chemicals include solutions to help the growing global demand for clean energy, particularly in the realm of sustainable hydrogen production.
Among our many innovations, our state-of-the-art anion exchange membrane, DURAION®, is designed to support alkaline membrane water electrolysis (AEM electrolysis).
The DURAION® membrane is the heart of AEM electrolysis, a technology that promises to significantly lower the specific investment and operating costs associated with green hydrogen production. By leveraging the polymer expertise of Evonik, we have crafted a membrane that strikes the perfect balance between chemical stability, mechanical integrity, and ionic conductivity—ensuring high efficiency without compromising on durability.
The AEM electrolysis technology we support offers the best of both worlds, combining the benefits of traditional alkaline electrolysis (AEL) and proton exchange membrane electrolysis (PEM). With DURAION®, we have overcome the limitations of AEL by enabling higher production rates and pressures, while avoiding the costly noble metal catalysts required by PEM electrolysis. Our technology operates under slightly alkaline conditions, allowing the use of noble metal-free catalysts and cost-effective materials for cell design.
Additionally, our SEPURAN® Noble membrane technology represents a significant leap forward in hydrogen recovery and purification. Developed specifically for hydrogen recovery, SEPURAN® Noble membranes enable highly pure hydrogen production even from low inlet concentrations. These membranes are not only highly selective but also contribute to reduced energy consumption, offering a sustainable solution for hydrogen recovery in refineries, ammonia, and methanol production 3.
For offshore hydrogen infrastructure, we have introduced our thermoplastic composite pipes (TCP) made with the "Dynamic duo:" VESTAPE® and VESTAMID® NRG. These pipes are designed to make gas distribution networks more affordable and efficient, capable of handling pressures up to 18 bar and suitable for transporting hydrogen.
Our commitment to the green hydrogen economy is unwavering. We actively support decarbonization initiatives on governmental and industrial levels, and we continuously explore innovative material solutions for a "greener" energy infrastructure. Our products are not just advancements in technology; they are stepping stones towards a sustainable future, and we invite engineers, procurement specialists, and industry professionals to join us in this green hydrogen journey.
