Dominik - An internship in production logistics

As an intern at Evonik Logistics Services, Dominik contributed to the digitalization of processes and successfully implemented a self-developed optimization.

From analyzing complex production logistics processes to putting digital solutions into action on the shop floor – our intern Dominik took on a wide range of challenges during his internship at our Evonik Logistics Services GmbH. Curious to learn more about his experience and key takeaways? Let’s dive into three questions with Dominik.

🎤 What did a typical day during your internship look like?

👤 At the beginning of my internship, a typical day was all about getting to know the various and very diverse processes within production logistics. Since the Essen plant has grown and changed over the years, the processes have naturally become just as diverse and adapted. It was a great way to start the internship because it allowed me to get to know the plant and many different colleagues. Later on, a typical day focused on developing concepts to digitalize and optimize the processes I had previously analyzed, which was a good mix of working on the computer and being out on the shop floor.

🎤 Was there a moment during your internship that made you feel especially proud?

👤 In the final weeks of my internship, I took a closer look at one of the processes that had previously been barely digital. I then implemented the optimized version I had developed by transferring the paper‑based steps onto a tablet as well as reducing interfaces. Afterwards, we tested and implemented the new digital process directly on site. It was encouraging to see that, even within three months at Evonik, I could contribute to putting some of the optimization work into practice. Seeing the impact of the work, even on a small scale, made the experience even more rewarding.

🎤 What’s one key takeaway from your internship that you’ll carry forward?

👤 I learned how valuable it is to have a strong network within a company. In a large organization, processes are naturally complex, and having the right contacts not only gives you good input and ideas but also helps you reach your goals more efficiently and faster.
