Essen, Germany. Evonik has published two new EPDs for building protection products via the Institute for Construction and Environment (IBU). The scientifically based documents transparently present the environmental impact of the products over their entire life cycle and are now publicly available via the IBU and other platforms.
Susanne Martens-Kruck, Technical Marketing Manager Silanes at Evonik’s Smart Effects business line: “The EPDs cover PROTECTOSIL® BHN and CIT, two end-user products from Smart Effects. PROTECTOSIL® BHN is a silane-based water-repellent impregnation for mineral surfaces such as concrete, clinker, and ceramic tiles. PROTECTOSIL® CIT acts as corrosion protection for existing reinforced concrete structures and reduces both water absorption and chloride-induced corrosion.”
“These products can extend the service life of buildings by several decades – for less than one percent of the total cost,” explains Nico Freudl, Regional Marketing Manager EMEA for Building Protection at Smart Effects.
The introduction of these EPDs reflects the growing demand within the construction industry for clear and comparable environmental data. In line with the European Construction Products Regulation, which will progressively make EPDs mandatory for certain product categories, Evonik is taking a forward-looking approach by publishing these declarations.
“With the EPDs, we are moving beyond conventional life cycle assessments (LCAs) and giving our customers the transparency they require for building certifications and material choices in their projects,” says Susanne Pellengahr, Head of Sustainability at Smart Effects. “This positions us as a market leader, delivering today what will soon become the industry standard.”
“Our PROTECTOSIL® solutions combine proven technical performance with documented sustainability benefits. By making the environmental impact transparent, we enable customers to make informed decisions that strengthen both the durability and sustainability of their construction projects”, concludes Martens- Kruck.
The declarations provide extensive data to support the calculation of building LCAs and equip planners, architects, and project managers with a dependable basis and documented proof for their construction decisions. By releasing these EPDs, Evonik reinforces its dedication to sustainability and openness in the building sector.
