Evonik wins CPHI Pharma Award 2026 for Self Driving Labs
- Winner in the “Digital Transformation” category
- Autonomous platform combines AI, automation and chemical expertise for API process development
- Industrial use cases show up to 100 autonomous experiments per day and overnight optimization
Evonik has won the 2026 CPHI Pharma Award in the “Digital Transformation” category for its Self Driving Labs. The globally available CDMO service combines artificial intelligence, automation and chemical expertise in a closed-loop platform that autonomously designs, executes and evaluates experiments for active pharmaceutical ingredient (API) process development.
“The CPHI award recognizes how Self Driving Labs turns AI into practical value for pharmaceutical customers,” said Daniel Fricker, Head of the Drug Substance product line at Evonik. “By reaching robust process conditions faster and generating richer data from the outset, we can help customers shorten development timelines, use expert resources more effectively and make better-informed scale-up decisions.”
Developing manufacturing processes for APIs is becoming more complex as pipelines expand beyond small molecules to modalities such as peptides and oligonucleotides. Conventional process development relies on sequential, manual experiments that can take weeks, produce limited analytical data and depend heavily on expert judgement. Once a process has advanced into later clinical phases, changes can also become more difficult to implement without adding cost, time and risk.
Self Driving Labs digitalizes the workflow from experiment design and execution to data capture, analysis and decision-making. Continuous processing platforms, interchangeable and 3D-printed reactors, high-throughput experimentation, process analytical technology and automated chromatography are connected through a secure orchestration layer. A Bayesian optimization algorithm evaluates results in real time and selects the next experiment, while Evonik’s AI-based user interface “AIChemBuddy” gives scientists transparency, traceability and control.
Self Driving Labs helps customers develop robust processes faster, improve reproducibility and reduce the risk of costly late-stage changes. The technology is being deployed globally for new development projects and the optimization of existing products.
The annual CPHI Excellence in Pharma Awards were established in 2004 to celebrate cross-industry innovators driving the industry forward. This year’s award was presented to Evonik at the CPHI pharmaceutical trade show in Milan on October 6, 2026. In previous years, Evonik has won in the category “Finished Formulation” for its EUDRACAP® colon functional capsules, in the category “Sustainability” for its plant-based squalene, PhytoSquene® and in the category “Packaging and Drug Delivery” for a polymer-based drug delivery system for mRNA and nucleic acid delivery.
Evonik Health Care is a global CDMO for active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) and intermediates, supporting pharmaceutical companies with process development, scale-up and manufacturing from clinical development through commercial supply. Its Drug Substance capabilities are part of a broader Health Care portfolio that includes advanced drug delivery solutions for oral and parenteral drug products, as well as growth platforms for lipid-based mRNA and gene delivery and cell culture solutions for biopharma applications.
