Evonik’s probiotic Fecinor® is a gut flora stabilizer containing natural fast-growing Enterococcus faecium CECT 4515. With a rapid multiplication rate and proven activity against enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC), it is an essential tool to prevent diarrhea in piglets.

Populating the gut with beneficial bacteria 

As a lactic acid producing strain, Fecinor® creates an unfavorable environment for pathogenic bacteria like E. coli rapidly and effectively. This is because Enterococcus faecium CECT 4515 has a very fast duplication rate. By populating the gut with beneficial bacteria, the probiotic supports intestinal health and benefits the host. This competitive exclusion reduces the risk of post-weaning diarrhea, a major concern for pig farmers. By maintaining balanced gut microbiota, Fecinor® supports digestion, nutrient absorption, and piglet immunity, ensuring a smooth transition from milk to dry feed and contributing to overall growth and productivity.

Activity against pathogens

As the piglet transitions from a milk-based to solid diet, the changes in feed consumption create an ideal environment for the proliferation of detrimental micro-organisms, including ETEC, Streptococci, Brachyspira, Salmonella, and viruses such as PEDV, TEGV and Rotavirus. Detailed analysis by Evonik scientists confirm the ability of Fecinor to inhibit growth of a number of these problematic micro-organisms.

Lactic acid’s multiple benefits

Fecinor® produces very high levels of lactic acid. This not only helps to reduce pH in the gut – itself an aid in combatting Post Weaning Diarrhea (PWD) - but also stimulates growth of Lactobacillus and other beneficial lactic acid bacteria in the gut. It promotes “cross-feeding”, where lactic acid is utilized by butyrate producers, resulting in high butyric acid production in the gut.
