Effect of methionine sources on growth performance and slaughter parameters of yellow broilers
65% DL-methionine (DLM) replacing 100% MHA-FA showed no differences on growth performance and slaughter parameters of yellow broilers. This trial confirms the nutritional value of 65% for MHA-FA compared to DLM. However, replacing 100% MHA-FA by 65% DLM in yellow broiler can save 3 to 5.2 RMB per ton feed.
This trial conducted at a customer’s farm showed that 65% DL-methionine can replace 100% MHA-FA in yellow broilers and reduce diet cost.

The objective of this trial was to determine the effect of 65% DL-methionine (DLM) replacing 100% MHA-FA on growth performance and slaughter parameters of yellow broilers.
Location: Guangdong, China
Project team leaders: Lisa Qiao, Dr. Brian Wang
| Animals | 1,680 male yellow broilers |
| Design | Total 1,680 broilers were divided into 2 treatments, with 6 replicates per treatment and 140 birds per replicate |
| Housing | All birds were fed in the same trial house with floor rearing system |
| Diets | The feeding period (1-62 days) included 3 feeding phases: 1) MHA-FA treatment: 2) 65% DLM treatment: |
| Feeding | Conducted in the same trial house, floor pens |
| Parameters | Growth performance: body weight (BW), average daily gain (ADG), feed conversion ratio (FCR) Slaughter parameters: body weight (BW), slaughtered rate, net carcass rate, breast rate |
| Duration | 1-62 days |
Trial results
- Compared with the MHA-FA treatment, the 65% DLM treatment (65% DL-methionine replacing 100% MHA-FA) showed no differences in yellow broilers’ body weight (BW, Figure 1), average daily gain (ADG, Figure 2), feed conversion ratio (FCR, Figure 3), as well as in slaughter parameters (Figure 4) of broilers.
- Adding 65% DLM to replace 100% MHA-FA in yellow broiler feed can save between 3 and 5.2 RMB cost per ton feed in the three feeding phases (Table 1).
