Shaping a more sustainable animal nutrition industry together
At Evonik, sustainability is integral to our mission of sciencing the global food challenge. The global animal protein industry uses a significant proportion of natural resources, and emits a high quantity of greenhouse gas and nutrient emissions. Around 65% of these impacts occur in animal feed production. That means that the animal nutrition industry is uniquely placed to drive progress on sustainability performance.
Our strategy
Each stage of the animal protein value chain has its own unique sustainability challenges. At Evonik, we take a holistic approach to improving sustainability performance at every stage we can.
While we reduce our footprint through sustainability initiatives that improve the environmental performance of our production and operations, we also improve the impact of our customers with sustainable products and services that enhance environmental performance on‑farm.
Reducing our footprint for better environmental outcomes
Every organization has a role to play in improving sustainability performance. And at Evonik, we are dedicated to reducing the carbon footprint of our operations. This focus enables us to provide a portfolio of low-carbon products and to meet your sustainable sourcing needs.
Through our initiatives, Evonik aims to lead by example, demonstrating how responsible practices in the animal protein industry can create a more sustainable future for all.
Externally-certified LCA calculation methodology
Evonik provides reliable data you can trust. The quality of LCA results depends on the quality of input data that was used, as well as many other methodological factors. Evonik’s calculation methodology has been externally certified by TÜV Rheinland against several global standards – namely, ISO standards 14040, 14044 and 14067 and the Together for Sustainability (TfS) Product Carbon Footprint guidelines – demonstrating our commitment to following best practices in sustainability management.
What’s in it for you:
Trust that lifecycle assessment results are reliable, and obtained through best-practice methods.
Committed to science-based climate action
In 2023, Evonik set science-based targets that were approved by the Science Based Targets Initiative (SBTi) as consistent with a well-below 2°C (WB2C) pathway. We are committed to reducing emissions in line with the latest climate science, and consequently, we are continually exploring and implementing more sustainable practices in our production processes. This approach not only benefits the environment but also helps our customers meet their own sustainability and regulatory requirements, and assures you that we will continue to reduce our Product Carbon Footprints over time.

What’s in it for you:
Assurance that Evonik aims to continue reducing greenhouse gas emissions over the long-term. Our greenhouse gas reduction roadmap outlines the steps we are taking to achieve these goals.
Annual ratings from EcoVadis and CDP
Evonik has a long history of integrating sustainability into everyday business processes. And our expertise is reflected in the ratings and rankings we receive from external agencies.
Evonik reports annually to CDP Climate, Water and Forests, and consistently achieves excellent EcoVadis ratings. Sustainable procurement policies increasingly demand suppliers participate in several sustainability rating schemes. See the full list and our scores here.
What’s in it for you:
Transparency in Evonik’s sustainability strategy, reporting and performance
Improving your impact – moving from footprint reduction to handprint creation
Evonik has decades of experience in sustainability development in the livestock industry. Our first product LCA was conducted over 20 years ago. And now, two decades later, we are applying our expertise to provide customers with Next Generation Solutions that target six key impact areas in the animal protein industry.
Evonik solutions deliver proven sustainability benefits to the animal feed and farming sectors: we measure and publish the results of handprint lifecycle assessments (LCAs) for a growing number of products. This ensures that our solutions are not just produced in a sustainable way, but help customers improve their own sustainability performance. Handprint LCAs calculate the sustainability performance improvements that can be achieved on-farm when using Evonik products in feed formulations versus the market reference figure.
Turning commitment into measurable change with proven products
For example, when used in broiler production under challenge conditions, probiotic Ecobiol® reduces greenhouse gas emissions by up to 5% and nutrient emissions by up to 8%.
Making sustainability tangible
Make use of our inoSust® service and our technical experts will help measure your feed or farming operation’s environmental performance, co-create solutions to improve it, and then measure the sustainability improvements you’ve achieved, ready for use in sustainability reporting or marketing materials.
What’s in it for you:
Handprint LCAs allow feed formulators to access data they need to choose products that enable a quantified sustainability improvement on-farm – and our inoSust® service provides support to measure, improve and communicate it.
Collaborations
Evonik actively engages with various industry associations to advance science-based sustainability standards, promote the benefits of animal protein, and establish uniform sustainability metrics across the livestock sector. Our collaborative efforts foster opportunities for innovation and improvement along the value chain.
