Effects of PROXYMet™ replacing MHA-FA in male broiler diets

Trial conducted by a broiler integrator in Oceania

This study conducted at a customer’s trial facility in Oceania showed that 1 kilogram of MHA-FA can be replaced by 650 grams of DL-methionine in male Ross 308 broilers. This has strong cost saving potential when applied in commercial production conditions.

Amy Liu Business Director, Evonik Australia
The results of this experimental trial clearly show that 650 grams of DL-methionine achieve the same performance in male broilers as 1 kilogram of MHA‑FA . This may have significant economic impact for commercial production.

The objective of this study was to evaluate whether 650 g of DL‑methionine supplied via PROXYMet™ could replace 1 kg of MHA‑FA in diets for all‑male broiler chickens while maintaining similar growth performance.

Animals320 Ross 308 male broilers
DesignCompletely randomized design:
2 treatments with 8 replicates per treatment, 20 birds each
HousingHousing is based on a pen-trial shed
Diets

Corn, soybean meal and sunflower based diet, supplemented with either:

1) MHA‑FA as the methionine source; or

2) PROXYMet™:
Similar to diet 1 but MHA-FA was replaced by PROXYMet™ (65% DL-Met, 35% limestone)
in a 1:1 weight ratio.

The feeding period (day 0-35) included 3 feeding phases:
Starter (day 0-10), grower I (day 11-21), grower II (day 21-28), and finisher (day 29-35)

FeedingThe alignment between measured and expected concentrations of ProxyMet™ and MHA‑FA throughout
all feeding phasessubstantiates the precision and consistency of feed manufacturing in the analyzed trial diets.

Trial results

  • The findings of this study indicate that the inclusion of 650 grams of DL‑methionine supplied through PROXYMet™ can effectively substitute for 1 kilogram of MHA‑FA in diets for all-male broiler chickens while sustaining comparable growth performance, as reflected by similar body weight (BW, Figure 1), feed consumption (Figure 2), and feed conversion ratio (FCR, Figure 3).
  • 650 grams of DL-methionine supplied through PROXYMet™ is equivalent to 1,000 grams of MHA‑FA.
  • Replacement of MHA-FA with PROXYMet™ resulted in a feed cost reduction of 1.42 USD/t (Table 1).

Bioefficacy of different methionine sources in male and female broilers

A joint research trial conducted at Kasetsart University, Thailand, compared methionine sources in male and female broilers at a 65% equivalency ratio to evaluate their effects on growth performance and feed efficiency.
