Relative bioavailability value of DL-2-hydroxy-4-methylthio butanoic acid to DL-methionine for growth performance parameters of male broilers
Results from this trial demonstrated that the average relative bioavailability value (RBV) of HMTBA to DL-Met for growth performance criteria is on average 78% on equimolar basis or 68% on product‑to‑product basis for male grower chickens.
Results from this trial demonstrated that the RBV of HMTBA was on average 78% on equimolar basis, which represents a 68% on product-to-product basis compared to DL-Met in the grower phase of broilers.

A study was conducted to estimate the relative bioavailability value (RBV) of DL-2-hydroxy-4-methylthio butanoic acid (HMTBA) to DL-methionine (DLM) for growth performance of male broiler chickens from 14 to 28 days of age
Location: Broiler research farm at Vicosa University, Brazil
Project team leaders: G. Aguiar, M. Hannas, J. D. Dorigam, V. D. Naranjo, A. Lemme
| Animals | 1,820 males Cobb 500 broilers |
| Design | Simultaneous dose response trial with liquid HMTBA and DL-Met to determine the relative bioavailability |
| Housing | Floor pens |
| Diets | Corn-soybean meal-based diets |
| Feeding | Negative control diet, without any supplemental Met and 6 increasing levels of supplemented methionine (0.04, 0.08, 0.12, 0.17, 0.25, and 0.33%) achieved with the inclusion of either DL-Met (99%) or HMTBA (88%) on equimolar basis. See Table 1 for details |
| Parameters | Body weight gain, feed intake and feed conversion ratio |
| Duration | 14 – 28 days of age |
| Statistics | Simultaneous dose-response multi-exponential function |
Trial results
- On equimolar basis, the calculated RBV were 79% for FBW (Final body weight, Figure 1) and 76% for FCR (Feed conversion ratio, Figure 2)
- On a product-to-product basis, the calculated RBV were 70% for FBW (Figure 1) and 67% for FCR (Figure 2)
- Based on these parameters, the average RBV of HMTBA to DLM for growth performance criteria (FBW and FCR) is 78% on equimolar basis or 68% on product-to-product basis for male grower chickens
