Building blocks for polyurethane
Evonik Crosslinkers is the pioneer in isophorone chemistry and covers the entire value chain from acetone to isophorone diisocyanate (IPDI). With its relatives H12MDI and TMDI, we offer a broad range of aliphatic monomers under the VESTANAT® brand for the synthesis of light stable polyurethanes (PURs) for coatings and other exterior applications.
Based on our broad expertise in the PUR market, we develop tailored specialty monomers to further enhance the performance of the polymer or coating.
Based on VESTANAT® IPDI, we offer a versatile range of hardeners for liquid coatings. This includes unblocked grades for 2K PUR systems e.g. for automotive clear coats as well as blocked grades for can and coil coating applications. Our new developments focus on lower temperature cure systems as well as systems with food contact compliance.

A product range with increasing importance are powder coatings. They combine ecological aspects – being completely solvent free – with economical aspects with extremely low overspray losses and very high possible coating thicknesses applied in a single pass. Powder coatings based on PUR systems provide highest quality with outstanding resistance against chemical and mechanical impacts.

We also offer full service support in achieving the best results for our customers – may they be looking for the smoothest surface, perfect matte appearance or the lowest possible curing temperature.

Process Innovation
We continuously improve and modernize our production processes. The process development is done in our high pressure hydrogenation pilot plant, a scale-up plant, a miniplant for isocyanate.
We work on various projects to improve the sustainability of our products. One example is the development of a large-scale process to produce sustainable acetone, combining chemistry and biotechnology. This research work is carried out in collaboration experts from the Ruhr University Bochum and the University of Leipzig.
To foster a circular economy, it is crucial to enhance innovation in recycling processes. Our focus encompasses both the recycling of internal waste streams generated at our manufacturing sites and the recycling of end-of-life products. A notable example of our research efforts is the chemical recycling of fiber-reinforced polymer composites (e.g. from wind turbine blades) and polyurethane-based products, like PU foams. Our goal is to effectively recover and reuse these valuable materials, contributing to sustainability and resource efficiency.
