Membrane technology for safe and efficient nitrogen generation in marine applications
In the shipping and marine industry, reliable nitrogen supply is essential for safety, operational efficiency, and cargo protection. Advanced marine membrane technology enables the on-site generation of high-purity nitrogen for a wide range of marine applications, including cargo tank inerting, LNG vessel operations, tank cleaning, and pipeline purging. By reducing oxygen levels and creating non-flammable atmospheres, membrane-based nitrogen systems help prevent explosions, minimize corrosion risks, and protect sensitive cargo during transport.
Nitrogen for mass transfer on bulk carriers
For certain raw materials like oil, cement and combustible chemicals that are transported in very large cargo ships, there is an inherent risk of explosion and fire. To prevent this, nitrogen, an inert gas, is introduced into individual cargo tanks - this reduces the air and oxygen content and creates a non-flammable atmosphere inside tank. The nitrogen replaces the tank atmosphere either by dilution or by displacement of the original atmosphere.
Nitrogen for the use and transport of liquefied natural gas (LNG)
Nitrogen also plays a role in the marine industry when it comes to LNG (liquefied natural gas). Ships that run on liquefied natural gas need nitrogen to inert their fuel tanks. This avoids the risk of explosion. LNG can also be transported by ship. Here, too, nitrogen flushing is used for inerting during transport, as described above. Nitrogen is also used in the cleaning of tanks and to flush unused lines of gas residues that might create an explosive atmosphere.
