Smart Effects is the powerful combination of our silica and silane technology expertise and processes. Evonik is the only company to provide precipitated and fumed silica, metal oxides, and specialty silanes from a single source – and in consistently high quality.

We initially invented the high-temperature flame hydrolysis process for fumed oxides. Based on decades of expertise, we have developed fumed aluminum oxides with exceptionally high purity and smart particle design. Smart Effects provides a broad range of AEROXIDE® branded alumina with tailored properties, including specialties for high-performance applications such as Lithium-ion batteries for electric vehicles.

For customers that encounter difficulties using powder products, fumed oxide dispersions provide a solution. Evonik not only has extensive knowledge but also sophisticated equipment, both are necessary to produce high-quality silica dispersions as well as TiO₂ and alumina dispersions.

Smart Effects is close to customers – with productions sites for silica, fumed metal oxides, and silanes on three continents, regional application technology centers, and local sales teams in more than one hundred countries. It’s part of our DNA to create system solutions that have a positive effect, both economically and sustainably. Our Silica/Silane System, for example, has played a key role in the development of modern tires: it enables tires with low rolling resistance, which can help reduce fuel consumption and related CO₂ emissions, while maintaining excellent wet grip and good abrasion resistance.
Other focus industries with innovative solutions include building protection, semiconductors, oral care, and lithium-ion batteries in electric vehicles.

Driving positive change together with our customers is what gets us out of bed every day. Our expertise is leading to great innovations, such as new CO₂ adsorbents for Direct Air Capture (DAC), and our patented water-based silanes with low VOC emissions. We can contribute to a lower CO₂ footprint in tire production with silica and silanes based on bio-/circular raw materials, an agricultural waste product, produced exclusively with green energy. And a novel Silica/Silane formulation enables so‑called Green Truck Tires with lower rolling resistance that can help reduce fuel consumption, while improving wet grip and shortening braking distances on wet roads – without compromising abrasion resistance.
