AEROSIL® fumed silica is a universally applicable rheology, free flow and anti-caking agent. Also available in pharma quality.
AEROSIL® is the brand name for Evonik’s synthetic fumed silica which is produced by flame hydrolysis. AEROSIL® is highly effective as a rheology controller, as well as an anti-caking and free flow agent. The AEROSIL® portfolio covers a wide range of hydrophilic and hydrophobic fumed silica with different surface areas and product properties.
In fluid media, AEROSIL® fumed silica enables the rheology to be adjusted specifically so that dispersed particles do not settle, and fluids do not run off upon application, not even on vertical surfaces. When stored, this network provides the fluid with a gel-like structure. Stirring or shearing the fluid breaks up the network and the AEROSIL® aggregates move freely in the fluid.
In powders, AEROSIL® fumed silica acts as a spacer by coating the surface of powder particles, preventing interparticle interactions and stickiness. As a result, powders remain free flowing during processing and do not clump during storage.
Ever since Evonik invented fumed silica in 1942, it has proven to enhance performance in many applications. Today, AEROSIL® is used in uncountable everyday items and high-tech applications – from toothpaste to EV-batteries.
The most important markets for AEROSIL® as a thickening agent are silicone products, sealants and adhesives, as well as cosmetic products. As an anti-caking and free flow agent, AEROSIL® is particularly in demand in the food, feed and pharma industries.
