The Environmental, Safety, Health, and Security (ESHS) department provides oversight to the site to ensure operations are performed in a safe and compliant manner. The ESHS Engineer/Associate provides ESHS program ownership and regulatory support to management and operations teams across the site to ensure the areas understand and achieve their ESHS regulatory and Evonik obligations. This position is also responsible for direct external contact with regulatory agencies.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • RCRA Program Ownership

  • Site expert in Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) – 40 CFR 260-280
  • Provide technical expertise and customer service for RCRA program, including:
    • Ownership of site RCRA policies, procedures, and training materials (development and implement)
    • Conducting training, as needed
    • Site expert in uniform hazardous waste manifesting, waste characterization, land disposal, universal waste, used oil, and lab pack coordination
    • Liaison between site, external customers, contractors, third-party waste management facilities, and regulatory agencies
    • RCRA permitting, including application preparation, modifications, and renewals
  • Complete required reporting, including biennial, annual manifest, and treatability reports
  • SARA Program ownership.

  • Expert in all SARA reporting, including TRI Reporting.

  • NPDES and Drinking Water Program Ownership Support

  • Expert in site’s National Pollution Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) permit and drinking water programs - 327 IAC 2, 327 IAC 5, 327 IAC 8
  • Liaison between site and regulatory agencies
  • Assist with permitting activities
  • General ESHS Program and Regulatory Support
    • Engage peers and customers in meeting compliance requirements and creating opportunities for streamlining compliance approaches
    • Develop and implement compliance tools to assist the site in understanding and maintaining compliance with program requirements
    • Perform program audits
    • Lead agency inspections for assigned programs
    • Keep abreast of changes to regulatory requirements and site applicability
    • Support ESHS event and change management as needed or as assigned, including evaluating ESHS program compliance data and events, taking follow-up action as appropriate and performing or providing guidance for investigations if needed
    • Contribute to establishing departmental goals and objectives aimed at improving ESHS performance
    • Contribute to actively managing ESHS spending

REQUIREMENTS

  • Required BS/MS in Engineering or related Science preferred (e.g. Chemistry, Environmental, Safety, Industrial Hygiene)
  • Minimum 2-5 years of experience in applicable functional area, preferably in a pharmaceutical or equivalent manufacturing environment
  • Strong demonstrated technical application, problem-solving, organization, communication, interpersonal and documentation skills
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate and work effectively across all levels of the organization
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to represent site during regulatory inspections involving assigned ESHS programs
  • Capable of performing detailed assessments to evaluate compliance risk and determine business priorities within the functional area
  • Ability to develop and implement action plans with sustainable compliance results
  • Strong project management skills
  • Strong computer application skills
