Transforming plastic waste into valuable resources
Pyrolysis is a transformative chemical recycling technology that reduces dependence on fossil fuels and feedstocks. At Evonik we leverage our expertise and technology to convert plastic waste into pyrolysis oil or pyoil, a suitable feedstock alternative to fossil naphtha.
Unlocking potential: overcoming barriers to transform plastic waste into high-quality feedstock
The innovative pyrolysis process has the potential to convert used plastic waste streams, unsuitable for mechanical recycling, into high-quality feedstock for even the most sensitive petrochemical industry applications.
Despite its potential, pyrolysis is still considered a new technology and faces challenges in scaling up due to contaminants like chlorides, sulfur, nitrogen, oxygen, and silicones, which can lead to issues such as fouling, corrosion or catalyst poisoning in downstream assets.
Evonik pioneers innovative adsorbents for safer pyrolysis oil in petrochemical applications
Evonik offers advanced solutions to tackle these challenges, thanks to many years of in-house experience in petrochemical applications. We provide technologies to reduce chloride concentration in the pyrolysis reactor, but even the cleanest pyrolysis oil products may still contain tens of parts per million (ppm) of organic chlorides, posing corrosion risks within petrochemical facilities.
To address this, Evonik is developing a new generation of pyrolysis oil-specific adsorbents. These innovative new adsorbents make it possible to meet even the most stringent chloride specifications required by petrochemical complexes. By working together, we can overcome these challenges and establish pyoil as a viable alternative to fossil naphtha.
