Leverage Relationships to Co-create Sourcing Value
Climate change poses a serious threat to our planet. Protecting our environment is a cornerstone in our corporate strategy and Evonik is committed to reduce direct energy and process-related emissions (scope 1) as well as indirect emissions from the purchase of electricity and thermal energy (scope 2).
Our Procurement organization focuses on reducing indirect emissions from the purchase of raw materials, logistics, packaging and indirect goods and services (scope 3). Currently over70% of our total (direct and indirect) CO2e-emissions are being categorized as scope 3 emissions. Increasingly important but difficult to capture, we not only want to help bring transparency and visibility to these indirect emissions, but also reduce them.
Open communication and collaboration with our supply chain partners is pivotal. Therefore, we are extending an invitation to you, as one of our suppliers, to collaborate and align with us on a common roadmap.
Cradle-to-Gate looks at a section of a product’s life cycle and refers to the carbon footprint that it produces from the moment resources are extracted (cradle) to the time it reaches the factory gate (gate).
The product carbon footprint measures the climate impact of a product, which arises in the form of greenhouse gas emissions (GHG). These emissions are measured for the life cycle of a product starting with the extraction until the end-of-life of a product.
In the chemical industry, Scope 3 emissions of purchased goods however, have been challenging to measure due to the complexity of the global chemical production. The global chemical sector initiative, Together for Sustainability (TfS), aims at solving this by launching an open-source PCF Guideline, a new global guidance for calculating Product Carbon Footprints (PCFs) in the chemical industry and beyond.
