API (Active Pharmaceutical Ingredient)

APIs are used for pharmacological activity in the diagnosis, treatment, or prevention of disease

Active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs) are defined as chemical, biological mineral or any other entity or component responsible for the therapeutic (pharmacological, physiological, physical, etc) effects in a product, such as vaccines, pharmaceutical (medicine)or medical device. Generally, drug products are consisting of various components. Among them, API is the primary ingredient. Other ingredients in drug products are known as 'excipients'. APIs are highly regulated, and companies in the entire API supply chain are subject to regular inspections and audits to ensure they meet safety and quality standards. their production is a highly sophisticated, technically demanding chemical and biochemical fermentation and/or synthesis process.  These ingredients comprise a considerable portion of the total cost for a drug. The second step in pharmaceutical manufacturing involves the final formulation of the drugs.
