Washcoat Additives

Fixation of catalytic metals

The typical automotive catalytic converter design employs a washcoat on a honeycomb support. The washcoat consists of a complex mixture of fine-grained, highly porous inorganic oxides. AEROSIL® fumed silica and AERODISP® silica dispersions or highly temperature stable AEROPERL® 3375/20 are added to the washcoat slurry to fix the catalytically active precious metals on the surface of the honeycomb and enhance the stability of the catalytically active layer. They combine high and clean surface areas for precious metals in washcoats which sustain the high temperatures in automotive catalysts.
