Spray Drying Aids

No more caking and clogging issues

Evonik offers a range of SIPERNAT® or AEROSIL® silica and silicate products as anti-caking agents for spray drying operations.

A wide range of products are produced by spray drying, for example food and feed, pharmaceutical ingredients and agrochemicals, building materials, polymer and resin powders, or spherical catalysts. What they all have in common is that it needs an anti-caking agent such as silica for a cost-efficient and sustainable spray drying process.

Fed into the spray dryer tower, silica binds to the drying particles and forms a protective layer on their surface. Its enormous absorption capacity also allows it to take up moisture or oil from the powder surface. This strongly reduces their stickiness, prevents agglomeration of the particles and adhesion to the walls of the spray dryer and pipes. Manufacturers benefit from trouble-free machine operation and improved yield without cleaning shutdowns caused by clogging.

Moreover: Silica improves the flow behavior, quality and functionality of the dried powder in the long term, during transportation and storage, even when exposed to humidity, temperature and compression.

Food grade silica as anti-caking aid for sustainable food processing

AEROSIL® and SIPERNAT® are available with special food/feed specifications. Silica from Evonik is a safe, well-proven and highly efficient free flow aid and anti-caking agent in spray-drying, storing and handling powdered foods – such as milk powder and non-dairy creamer, whey powder, egg powder, spices and flavors tomato powder, soup mixes, powdered beverages, or dietary supplements. In the European Union, synthetic amorphous silica (SAS) is approved as a food additive with the identification number E 551. It enhances efficiency and sustainability in all stages of the food value chain by reducing raw material and food waste due to caking, as well as water and energyconsumption for cleaning production systems.
