Evonik solutions for Corrosion Protection
Reinforced concrete structures such as bridges, multi-story car parks and port facilities are exposed to heavy loads on a daily basis. Penetrating (sea) water and pollutants dissolved in it, as well as de-icing salts, can compromise the stability of the buildings, as chloride ions attack the passivation layer of the steel and can lead to corrosion pitting.
Creating a permanent passivation layer
Evonik has developed PROTECTOSIL® corrosion protection products, that provide unique and long-lasting corrosion protection. The organofunctional silanes create a hydrophobic effect and bond to the steel surface - forming a permanent passivation layer that can stop and prevent corrosion. As scientific studies show, up to 80 percent of the causes of damage to reinforced concrete can be prevented or stopped in this way.
Useable as a spray and admixture
PROTECTOSIL® is sprayed onto existing structures, only needing a short time to penetrate - this reduces the time structures need be closed for the application. For new construction projects, the corrosion protection agents are used as admixture in concrete. Here the active ingredients are distributed homogeneously throughout the matrix during the mixing process for the building material. With its long-lasting corrosion protection, PROTECTOSIL® reduces cost-intensive and time-consuming maintenance measures. In addition, existing buildings and structures can be preserved for longer, allowing resources to be used more responsibly and CO2 emissions to be reduced.
