Rotor Blades & Composite Structures

Wind turbine blades must be strong, lightweight, and fatigue resistant. Evonik’s materials ensure optimal performance across the entire blade length.

  • VESTAMIN® IPD - State-of-the-art crosslinker for the liquid epoxy matrix technology used in rotor blades. It's also essential for enhancing the performance of the adhesives used, providing reactivity in the curing process and giving the final composite parts outstanding mechanical strength.

  • DYNASYLAN® – Coupling agents give a lasting connection between glass fiber mats and resins, helping to optimize the stability of composites. These products improve adhesion, minimize moisture sensitivity and protect glass fibers.

  • ROHACRYL® - The acrylic chemistry-based structural foam is a core material solution that has excellent mechanical properties and is thermally stable. It is lightweight, easy to shape and has no impact on the environment.

  • ALBIDUR® and NANOPOX® – improve fatigue performance under the harshest of environmental conditions. 

  • VISIOMER® - Specialty methacrylates act as low-hazardous reactive diluents in composite resins based on unsaturated polyester or vinyl ester formulations, offering a safer alternative to styrene.

Adhesives

Robust adhesives enable the construction of longer rotor blades and ensure greater durability.

  • ANCAMIDE® - High-performance curing agents that extend gel times to increase bond line lengths and enable the manufacture of even larger rotor blades meeting future demand and production challenges.

  • AEROSIL® - Effective thixotropies guarantee the stability of rotor blade adhesives during processing. In surface coatings, it supports good opacity of lacquers and improves scratch resistance.

  • ALBIDUR®, ALBIPOX® and NANOPOX® - Modified resins enable long-lasting components, whether as tackifiers for fabrics or tougheners for paste adhesives and infusion resins. They improve rotor blade service life by providing exceptional fatigue-resistance properties.

Coatings & Resins 

Rotor blade coatings enhance weather resistance and boost durability, reducing maintenance costs and increasing lifespan.

  • VESTANAT® - Cycloaliphatic polyisocyanates used as gel coats, coatings or in-mold coatings for rotor blades that optimize drying and chemical resistance, improving the rotor blade's resistance to weathering

  • VISIOMER® - Specialty methacrylates are used as reactive diluents or crosslinkers in unsaturated polyester resins and vinyl ester formulations, making them ideal for full, or the partial substitution of styrene in composite resins.

  • NANOPOL® - Nanoparticles protect blades against damage from salt and sand. This protection significantly benefits wind farm operators as it can take two days to replace an offshore rotor blade at sea.

Mechanical Components & Gearbox Applications

Reliability is non-negotiable for turbine gearboxes and structural components exposed to extreme loads, stresses and harsh environmental conditions.

  • VESTAKEEP® PEEK – High-performance thermoplastic for gears, bushings, and structural components. Offers exceptional wear resistance, chemical stability, and dimensional accuracy.

  • VESTAMID® – Versatile polyamides for cable sheathing, connectors, and protective housings. Combines toughness with corrosion resistance for long-term outdoor use.

Gearbox Lubricants 
Using high-performance lubricants helps extend the service life of wind turbines, reduce maintenance requirements and lengthen oil drain intervals — delivering a significant impact on the total cost of ownership (TCO).

  • NUFLUX® powered by VISCOBASE® synthetic base stocks provides cost-effective, ready-to-use lubricant technology. Wind turbine gear oils formulated with VISCOBASE® meet multiple original equipment manufacturer (OEM) specifications, including those required for the latest most powerful gearboxes.
