AEROXIDE® fumed alumina increases the flowability of cathode active materials

The Challenge

Cathode active materials (CAM) are the source for the Lithium-ions inside a Li-ion battery and therefore one of the most important battery materials. But processing CAM powders is challenging, due to their stickiness and bad flowability.

Good flowability is crucial for cathode active material production and use of the CAM powder for the new technology of dry processing of cathode electrodes.

A smart solution is dry coating the top of cathode active materials with very small amounts AEROXIDE® fumed alumina to achieve free-flow behavior.

Especially AEROXIDE® Alu 130 with its high surface area and outstanding dispersibility significantly improves the flowability of CAM powders and outperforms coarser metal oxides.

AEROXIDE® Alu 130 can be used both to improve the flowability of precursor cathode active material (pCAM) and the final CAM powder – especially single-crystal type – during cathode material production and refinement. It also enhances the processing of CAM powders during dry manufacturing of cathodes.
