AEROXIDE® fumed alumina for paper coating applications
The Challenge
An inkjet photo paper consists of multiple layers, including a base layer, a coating layer that enhances ink absorption and color brilliance, and a top coating that adds gloss or matte finish, ensuring high-quality image reproduction.
AEROXIDE® creates microporous coatings that absorb ink droplets instantaneously, allowing advanced inkjet printers to operate at high speeds without compromising image quality. This rapid absorption prevents inter-color bleeding. Additionally, AEROXIDE® provides high gloss and transparency, which is particularly beneficial for photo inkjet printing.
Evonik’s Smart Solutions
The advantage of fumed alumina in comparison to fumed silica in microporous photo coatings is a lower binder demand, lower viscosity of final formulations, and higher gloss and color brilliance in photo realistic printouts.
AEROXIDE® fumed alumina with different specific BET surface areas and aggregate sizes improves transparency, gloss, quick absorption, and color brilliance – either as single coating or top layer coating.
The cationic surface charge of the AEROXIDE® fumed alumina supports a superior water fastness in inkjet coatings.
Producers of high-quality photorealistic inkjet paper can choose from tailored AEROXIDE® products including AEROXIDE® powder and ready-to-use AERODISP® dispersion.
