Surface modified AEROXIDE® fumed alumina catches unwanted transition metal ions and extends battery lifetime
The Challenge
Transitions metals (TM) such as Manganese (Mn), Nickel (Ni) and Iron (Fe) are crucial elements in cathode active materials (CAM), such as NMC and LFP. But during the battery life, TM-ions leach out of the CAM, move through the electrolyte and the separator, settle and finally react with the anode surface. This leads to a decrease in battery lifetime.
LIB cell producers try to counteract TM leaching by using special additives in the liquid electrolyte. However, every additional additive in a LIB cell can potentially cause unwanted side reactions.
