Recover valuable metals from lithium-ion batteries at the end of their lifecycle

Evonik provides many different production solutions in the form of minute additives that yield large improvements in productivity and processability of lithium-ion batteries used in the electric vehicle industry. Our process enablers contribute to further improvements in the production process of lithium-ion batteries, as well as increasing yields for better electrical performance and lower overall costs.

Evonik’s high-quality and pure AEROXIDE® fumed metal oxides and AERODISP® alumina dispersions play a crucial role in Lithium-ion batteries.

The dry coating of cathode active materials (CAMs) with AEROXIDE® leads to the formation of a protective layer around the CAM particles, resulting in a significant increase of the battery lifetime.

On the separator, AEROXIDE® and AERODISP® are used to coat the polymer-based membrane with a very thin ceramic layer as safeguard against the thermal runaway of a Li-ion battery. In addition, AEROXIDE® can be used as ceramic filler inside of the separator to realize the design of even thinner separators, while maintaining a very high safety. 

Hydrogen peroxide is added to the leaching process of lithium-ion battery (LiB) recycling technology to recover the valuable and rare metals lithium and cobalt. Persulfates offer a purely oxidative pathway for recovering lithium from lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries. Hydrogen peroxide is also an effective and sustainable solution for wastewater treatment, breaking down organic chains and reduce the chemical oxygen demand of wastewater.
